Food can provide a way to focus on something other than the emotional turmoil a person is feeling and provide a temporary escape from the external pressures they are experiencing. Unfortunately, not only does overeating contribute to obesity, but it can also create serious health problems that result from eating unhealthy foods. Very often “comfort foods” means sweets, fatty foods, or salty snacks – all foods that contribute to overall poor health.

So why are you an emotional overeater? One theory is that overeating is a way of creating a facade of control. Perhaps you feel that you have no control over your stressors: your boss, your kids’ teachers, or your spouse, and overeating gives you a semblance of control at least over your own body. Ironically, as with other eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia, the victim of compulsive overeating is not in control at all. Without help, emotional overeaters suffer the emotional and physical ramifications that are caused by their excessive eating.

The over-consumption of food can even create a euphoric feeling: an endorphin “high.” Some theories suggest that while the body can produce endorphins when it feels full, in overeaters, these chemicals are released to increase a person’s happiness and satisfaction level when they overeat. It’s a vicious cycle indeed, because that temporary rush of endorphins that feels so good at the moment that the person overeats, causes the very behavior that can lead to long term obesity, unhappiness and illness.

Overcoming emotional overeating is difficult. But it CAN be done! If you think you are an emotional overeater, you need to address and eliminate the emotional issues that began the damaging and painful cycle of overeating, and take steps to cleanse your body and mind and change your life. You can get healthy again through a safe, permanent weight loss program that will help you to focus on creating a healthier lifestyle.
