The Japanese name for the karate training uniform is “karategi.” In general, the karate uniform is light and loose fitting. Since karate training involves a lot of striking and kicking the uniform needs to offer for a maximum of mobility and speed.

A cheaper karate uniform is often cut from a lighter fabric comparable to a summer shirt. However, these are subject to easy ripping. They also tend to stick to the students’ skin. This often causes discomfort, particularly after an extended training session. This type of material isgenerally an 8 oz weight fabric.

The quality karate uniform is made from a light canvas. This cloth stands up to a greater amount of abuse than the cheaper kind. It is also less restrictive when it comes to mobility. These uniforms are generally 10 oz in cotton canvas.

Still, the more favored of the karate uniforms is the heavier fabric which is made from a 12 or 14 oz cotton canvas. Some manufacturers even have a 16 oz material. These uniforms usually receive an additional step during the final processing which involves brushing the cotton canvas. This allows for a more comfortable feel for the student. Even though these uniforms are heavier many of the karate practitioners prefer them because of their durability.

Although there are many different styles in karate uniforms they all have the same basic design. The only difference is found in the lengths of the legs and skirt of the jacket as well as the sleeves. Also, many of the karate practitioners wear their belt longer than those in other martial arts, such as judo.

For a new student joining a class, s/he will want to eventually purchase a uniform so s/he does not look different from the other students. The day the uniform is purchased is an exciting day as the student has accomplished the goal of showing those around him/her that he plans to continue his/her mission. When making the first purchase the parent of a young person may choose the cheaper uniform. This is basically because of the cost, but also because the parent may question how long their child will remain in the program. If possible, it is suggested that at least the middle grade be selected. It will eventually pay for itself in the higher qualities it has to offer.

The karate uniform has been around for many years. Through the ages the style and cut has basically remained the same, just like the sport has maintained its specific standards.
