Agility: How Important Is It?

When you talk about being manly in terms of physical ability, what do usually think about? Perhaps, you may think of bulging muscles and beastly strength. I do not blame you, tradition has taught us that—men are pressured to be physically strong.

But fitness is not all brawn and muscle. There are many sides to being fit than just strength. It is not often that we hear someone saying, “How fast can you change direction in mid-air?” or “How many punches can you throw in ten seconds?” When you come to think about it, those are legitimate questions and meant to illustrate your physical ability. That, my friends, is an inquiry about your agility.

More often than not, agility is an overlooked aspect of fitness especially among average exercising-folks. On the other hand, athletes know how important it is to have a high level of agility in their respective sports. Basketball players need the ability to manipulate their movements in mid-air to become more effective in the game. Athletes need quick and effortless movements to win in many sports.

Agility also promotes effortless and fluid motion. If you are nimble and able to move with ease, you work more efficiently. You also avoid injuries such as strain and cramps, and you do tire so easily. What is the use of having beastly strength if you cannot move well enough to do your chores. In the end, in regards to athletic competition, it is all about mastery of specific movements.

Here’s how to increase your agility level:

Body weight should be considered because the lighter your body. Lean and light people tend to become more agile. Fat people should find the quickest way to lose weight and get a move on it. Do some exercises and employ fat burning diets to start improving your agility.

Later, you should add more intense exercises in your program. Employ exercises that will improve your overall agility. Keep in mind that exercises should be more explosive and speedy. Sprinting, boxing, hip-hop dancing, and swimming are just some activities that you can do.

If you are an athlete or just passionate about a certain sport, it is best to do specific drills and exercises. If you play basketball, do some agility drills for basketball. In boxing as well, skip ropes or do some combination punching with a friend. That way, you are improving your fitness and having fun at the same time.
